OC asked Mr. Weigel if John Paul II should be seen as a “progressive” — with his teachings on “personalism?” Weigel said “yes,” and added that John Paul II expanded the Church’s understanding of herself. He suggested that “it will take 400 years for the Church to fully understand John Paul II’s contribution.”
Hopefully, it won’t take that long. Our view is that John Paul II’s teaching on “personalism” was the perfect antidote to communism but also the perfect antidote to “individualism” — which continues to devour people with a false idea of freedom, resulting in a proliferation of activists who live “like God doesn’t exist” — and create new forms of tyranny.
Mr. Weigel’s unrepentant support for the Iraq War shows that while he may have spent a great deal of time with John Paul II — he has fallen short in his own journey to be an authentic witness and guide.
“By this shall all men know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
