The Villanova University School of Business has what they call, the Center for the Study of Church Management, offering educational programs and research in administration, financial management, and human resource management, specifically geared toward the Catholic Church. According to Charles Zech, the center’s director, “Nobody entered the seminary because they wanted to run a small business, yet that’s what a Church is.” No Mr. Zech, that’s not what the Church is, but rather what the Church is being turned into.

Recent experience (over the last 50 years) has demonstrated that the existing diocesan model doesn’t work for nurturing “holy” priests and a healthy Church. Going forward consideration should be given to decoupling priests and bishops from financial matters, especially fundraising, in the hope that they will better tend to their flock.
