With the American Catholic Church acting as an NGO and seeking to ‘partner’ with the U.S. government, the body of Christ withers.

The American Catholic Church receives billions of dollars (for a select few) from federal and state governments. The result is a hierarchy that has increasingly pitched its tent with the State rather than with the Lord.

One manifestation of this shift in allegiance is Church leaders allying themselves with the ‘strong’ in society — ‘us’, and seeing the poor as separate — ‘them’. A recent Sunday bulletin from a church on Manhattan’s Upper East Side had this comment from the pastor: “Our home is refuge for each of us…our continuing efforts in guiding public policy can help lift the burden of homelessness from our needy neighborhoods and give them a safe refuge also.”
