ChurchNYCAt a time when the renewal and restoration of the Spirit is so needed in the Church, many in the hierarchy are focusing on the renewal and restoration of the ‘externals’ — candelabra, door handles etc.

The resulting fixation on fundraising has seen in the priest’s role as shepherd give way to ‘priest as CEO,’ with a transactional relationship between clergy and laity.

At a recent Mass in Manhattan, one of the prayer intentions was: “For those in our community who care for the less fortunate that they may be blessed.”

Commentary: We are all called to care for those in need — to be both sheep and shepherd.
