Occupy Wall Street marchers passed by Our Lady of Victory Church in Lower Manhattan on 9/17 — the one year anniversary of the movement. It was also the 225th anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution. One of the placards read: All Our Grievances Are Connected.

Commentary: The framers of the U.S. Constitution were seeking a ‘more perfect union’, which today has degenerated into ‘connected grievances’. The marchers looked like sheep without a shepherd, in need of nourishment and a mother.

Two hundred and twenty-five years of individualism and animal spirits have left the United States with damaged people, corrupt institutions and no checks and balances. It didn’t have to be this way. The best hope going forward starts with a more thorough understanding of reality — including participation in divine life.
