PopeFrancis-Brazil (2)At Masses in New York City churches, prayer intentions regularly include praying for “the safety of those who keep us safe.”

In Rio de Janeiro, Philadelphia Archbishop Chaput told John Allen, of the National Catholic Reporter, that young people from Pennsylvania were discouraged from attending World Youth Day because of security concerns.

American Catholics are internalizing, even promoting, the military and security mindset of their misguided government. Hopefully Pope Francis will speak directly during WYD about the evil of U.S. Government policies (most recently arming terrorists in Syria) — and its permanent war against humanity and Divine truth. The embrace of disruption and exploitation, as a way of life, is undermining peace and stability in human hearts and the world.

Mature Christians should fear the Lord and then not be afraid, even when the world crushes us. But today American Catholics are taught not to fear the Lord and to fear everything else.

“Faith is born of an encounter with the living God who calls us and reveals his love, a love which precedes us and upon which we can lean for security and for building our lives.” Lumen Fidei, 2013
