“Into his hand I commend my spirit, when I sleep and when I wake.” The Standard Machsor for (Jewish) New Year (Bloch, 1925)
“Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit.” Luke 23: 46
Today, rather than letting the Lord of hosts shield his people with his peace, many Jews and Christians are seeking refuge in weapons systems and sinful deeds—thereby undermining the work of salvation.
We are joined with Pope Francis in praying and fasting for peace in Syria, and for the conversion of the hearts of those who seek to exploit and dominate others, especially Israeli and American government officials. It’s important for people to understand that the hell in Syria was orchestrated by the U.S. State Department in collaboration with Israeli interest groups. “This is a playoff situation in which you need both teams to lose, but at least you don’t want one to win—we’ll settle for a tie…let them both bleed, hemorrhage to death; that’s the strategic thinking here. As long as this lingers, there’s no real threat from Syria.” Alon Pinkas, former Israeli Consul General in New York (NY Times – 9/6/13)
In January 1991, Mother Teresa wrote to George H. W. Bush and Saddam Hussein to try to persuade them not to go to war:
I write to you with tears in my eyes and with the love of God in my heart, to beg you…with all my heart that you spare no efforts in favor of the peace of God and to reconcile yourselves with one another…
You have the capacity and force to destroy the presence and image of God, in his men, in his women, in his children. Listen, please, to the voice of God. God has created us to love each other with his love and not to destroy ourselves with our hates…
I beg you…on behalf of those who will be deprived of the most precious gift which God is able to give us: life, I beg you that you save our brothers and sisters, yours and ours, because God gives them to us to love them and to care for them. We do not have the right to destroy what God has given us. Please, please allow your intelligence to be the intelligence and will of God. You have the capacity to bring war into the world and to make peace. Please, choose the way of peace.
“The presence of the nuclear bomb in the world has created fear and distrust among nations as it is one more weapon to destroy human life, which is God’s beautiful presence in the world. How can peace be established? Only if we love each other. The greedy who are fighting for power and money do not know love and love alone can help establish peace in the family, in society and in the world.”
