JordanValleyDuring his trip to the Holy Land, Pope Francis will be laying a wreath on the grave of Theodor Herzl (1860-1904), founder of political Zionism.

Some are dismayed that Pope Pius X rebuffed an overture, made in 1904, by Herzl to support Zionist aspirations.

Many more are dismayed that the Zionists have failed to live up to the spirit of the Balfour Declaration (“it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine”), and Herzl’s hope for the “neutrality of a Judeo-Arab Confederation, inspired by our highest traditions and heralding still wider visions of peace.” Edmond Fleg, The Land in Which God Dwells, 1955
