World“Do not model yourself on the behavior of the world around you, but let your behavior change — modeled by your new mind. This is the only way to discover the will of God and know what is good what it is that God wants, what is the perfect thing to do.” Romans 12:2

On this Labor Day in the U.S., Catholics can be thankful for the gift of life and the opportunity to participate in God’s work of creation and redemption — with their honest work and faithful lives. But at the same time to be mindful of the “behavior of the world” that rebels against God’s will, and is very much embedded in the American ‘way of life.’

The United States has, since its inception, seen itself as the ‘new world’ — and yet its self-centered mindset (driven by self-interest, self-reliance and self-help) has put it in opposition to the New Covenant, the new mind, and the new man, sought after and enabled by Our Lord.
