“It is the things that come out of a man that make him unclean. For it is from within, from men’s hearts, that evil intentions emerge: fornication, theft, murder, adultery, avarice, malice, deceit, indecency, envy, slander, pride, folly. All these things come from within and make a man unclean.” Mark 7: 21:23
A priest at St. Patrick’s in NYC said, in his homily today, “holiness is not earned or achieved” and “holiness is the degree to which one is united to God by God.” If the first statement were true wouldn’t everyone already be holy, because Our Lord seeks the salvation of everyone. The fact is Our Lord created and redeemed us without our help, but He won’t save us without our help. We must participate with our “yes” in the freedom of faith — to live the Word, grow in holiness, and be saved.
“The way of perfection passes by way of the cross. There is no holiness without renunciation and spiritual battle. Spiritual progress entails the ascesis and mortification that gradually lead to living in the the peace and joy of the Beatitudes.” CCC 2015
